We’ve been buzzing about a new Canadian artist named Trish here at the MuchMusic for several months now. VJ Sarah Taylor became a fan of her dirty electro-pop/hip-hop/R&B after watching her perform at Honey Jam. Trish’s new music video “Don’t Watch Me” is pure house-party eye candy with a beat so grimy it makes you wanna get a fierce haircut, grab a drink and hit the dancefloor. (And maybe make a semi-naughty home video too.) Watch it here.

She might be an unsigned artist, but Trish got award-winning director Little X to shoot this video. In between dance rehearsals for her next video “Bump,” Trish talked to us about working with X and why she should never hold a giant sword again.

The song is called “Don’t Watch Me.” What exactly does this mean?
TRISH: Don’t Watch Me is just that everyday saying when you are trying to do your thing and someone is putting you on blast. The song in itself is about agreeing to disagree.

What was it like working with Little X?
He is a really cool and humbled cat. I had the opportunity to meet with him a few times and we spoke about the track but he never mentioned directing it, so it was quite a huge surprise to me. I learned some of the basic rules on what not to do (laughs)! He told me to not think about what is going on beyond the camera, which helped me focus on what I was doing, and not who is walking on and off set. He has basically helped me get over my first hurdle.

You’re wielding a giant sword in the video. Did you do any fancy moves with the sword that didn’t make into the final cut?
I almost chopped off my leg at one point so I don’t have any weaponry skills! Ha! The sword was actually on display at the house, I thought it was really cool so they allowed me to use it. Before we began shooting, X showed me a few strikes and positions to do just to get an idea of the proper way to wield a sword.

This party was set-up specifically for your video, but what do you think are the elements needed for a great house party?
A good DJ is a must along with a great selection of music. Party people, not party poopers! A good host, food and drinks are necessary and outdoors would be nice.
