Von Bondies @ Lee’s Palace

June 3rd, 2009

Last Friday night Detroit indie-punk heroes The Von Bondies rolled into Lee’s Palace like a truck full of fireworks in the middle of a thunderstorm. Yes, their 60 minute show was pretty much that intense. And yes, you missed it again. Damnit, Charlie, you gotta start coming out to these things!

So as usual we were running late, and we showed up at the venue in time to miss the first act, Lightning Love. But we did catch The Raccoons, from Victoria BC, who’ll be creeping into your backyard, I mean probably your iPod, soon.

No matter that the Von Bondies have been around since 2000, they’re still hardcore (or still trying to save money) enough that they were setting up their own instruments before the set. Their fans were cool with this, though, since it gave them extra time to watch Jason Stollsteimer, bassist Leann Banks, and guitarist Christy Hunt warm up. Stollsteimer entertained the audience with a quick and dirty riff on the twelve bar blues, which was a pretty awesome pseudo-start to the show.

You pretty much know it’s going to be a good show when the band opens by telling the audience to get a drink: “We wrote all these songs on alcohol,” Stollsteimer announced from behind his incredibly emo haircut, “so you should listen to them on alcohol”. The rest of the band nodded vigorously, and more than audience member took their advice.

The set itself was equally hardcore, as the band performed tracks from their new album Hate Love and Then There’s You and some golden oldies from their 2003 record Pawn Shoppe Heart (which by the way is my new favourite song by them - listen to the way Stollsteimer screeches in the verses).

Though the band is Stollsteimer’s baby, he let his band mates have equal spotlight time, which was super chill of him. Don Blum’s drum kit was a little more front and center than where most bands set theirs up, and the female half of the band got to sing a few songs on their own.

Speaking of which, I have got to say, as a chick, that I am super impressed by the chicks in this band. Banks looked like the epitome of punk-chic in pink stockings and jet-dyed hair, and Hunt was doing all kinds of crazy rock star poses, jumps, and struts, in HEELS (!!!) and a short white dress.

Set highlights included, of course, new single “Pale Bride”, and “C’mon C’mon”, which had the audience chanting along as the band rocked their set to a close. Yes, Charlie, that’s all you get. You should have come to the show when you had a chance. Head on out to the Prairies this week, you can see them there.
