The White Stripes will be releasing the DVD of their Canadian documentary, Under Great White Northern Lights, on March 16th. But check out all of the extras coming in the lavish box set edition: “a DVD of the film itself, a DVD of White Stripes 10th anniversary show (dubbed The White Stripes Under Nova Scotian Lights), a 16-track White Stripes live album recorded during the Canadian trek on both 180 gram vinyl and CD, a live 7″ (featuring “Icky Thump” and “The Wheels on the Bus”), a 208-page book with photos from the tour by Autumn de Wilde (and a foreword by Jim Jarmusch), and a silk screen print.”

Call it what you will (karma!), but it appears Jay Reatard is getting payback for that incident on stage in Toronto last year, where he clobbered an unknowing stage invader. Last night in Austin, Jay was attacked by two rowdy fans during the final song of his set. Not cool.

Vancouver’s hippest and hyped synth pop duo Fan Death have signed with Last Gang Records (Crystal Castles, Metric). Dandi Wind and Marta Jacuibek will release an EP on February 23rd called A Coin For The Well, followed by an LP, Womb of Dreams, in May 2010.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ singer Karen O has been nominated for a Grammy! Best of all, it comes at the expense of Miley Cyrus’s nomination, which was revoked for some reason or another (quality, perhaps?). Where The Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze posted an email on his blog from a rep at Karen’s label explaining what happened. You can read it here.

And the Besnard Lakes will return with a follow-up to their 2007 Polaris-nominated album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse. The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night will be out through Outside in Canada and Jagjaguwar in the U.S. on March 9th.

11/17/09 News briefs: Florence and the Machine, Paper Bag Records, NME, The Twilight Sad and The Cribs

It’s not uncommon for record companies to reissue an album months later as a bonus/deluxe package containing new goodies. But this news about the re-release of Florence and the Machine’s Lungs is a bit OTT. Her label will release a four-disc version of the singer’s Mercury-nominated debut album, with the bonus discs Live At Abbey Road, Remixes, Covers and Rarities and a Live From Rivoli Ballroom DVD. Is there anything left?

Paper Bag Records is celebrating its seven-year anniversary with a collection of 12 covers to download for free. Among the 12 songs are Winter Gloves doing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Laura Barrett doing Beck’s Gamma Ray” and most curious of all, CFCF doing OMC’s “How Bizarre.”

The NME has revealed its 100 albums of the decade… but only putting the top 50 up on its website. The five best albums are: 5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fever To Tell, 4. Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, 3. Primal Scream XTRMNTR, 2. The Libertines Up The Bracket and drum roll… 1. The Strokes Is This It. (Like you didn’t know that….)

Scottish gloom rockers The Twilight Sad were robbed at gunpoint by two men dressed in fake police uniforms. I’m not sure why they thanked them for the experience, but they could be resorting to sarcasm after such a humiliating experience.

The Cribs have announced they will tour North America with ex-Smiths guitarist and newest member Johnny Marr. The Leeds-based band will play Toronto on January 5th and Vancouver on January 31st.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs will celebrate their tenth anniversary by playing Fever To Tell in its entirety. The band will perform their debut album at All Tomorrow’s Parties’ Ten Years of ATP festival in England, which takes place December 11th to 13th.

Sufjan Stevens is now saying that his quest to record albums about each of the 50 states was just a joke. He tells Paste, “I think maybe I took it too seriously. I started to feel like I was becoming a cliché of myself.”

The soon-to-be reunited Pavement have announced they’ll compile a collection of radio sessions. Spiral Stairs tells NME.com that it will be previously unheard material made up of their best known songs and outtakes.

Toronto’s Born Ruffians have told Exclaim! that they’ll be releasing their second album some time in 2010. Frontman says the new one is the result of a more collaborative effort and a do-what-feels-right direction.”

Mogwai have a new film and live album on the way. The film is titled Burning and will make its premiere at the Copenhagen Documentary festival on November 13th. The album, Special Moves, will be released along with the DVD of the film, though no date has been set.

Videos For Your Face

I’m back with some fresh new videos for your face.

If u seek Amy!  Britney’s got another controversial HIT song on her hands.  But before you go looking for Amy, I challenge you to find Brit Brit’s nipples first.  Holy gravity Batman!

While I’ve got you thinking about Britney I may as well pass this gem on to you. A Static Lullaby have covered her hit “Toxic” and it doesn’t totally suck. It just sucks a bit. Wait for the screamo dude that looks like he overdosed on flinstone tablets as a kid.  No wait, I’m the kid that overdosed on flinstone tablets as a kid.  Just wait for it

On a more positive note.  Got videos by two bands that both front hot lead singers.  The Yeah Yeah Yeahs highly anticipated new album It’s Blitz! first single “Zero”.  And for your rare dose of cancon (that’s short for ‘canadian content’ all you crazy 11-year-olds out there)  Metric’s “Gimme Sympathy”, which is their first single off Fantasies.
