Have you ever heard of Tune-Yards? Well, if you haven’t, you’ll probably still have the same question marks hovering over your noggin after you listen to the tunes of this Portland musician.
Otherwise known as Merril Garbus, the title of Tune-Yards is far more appropriate for this one-woman-show as she brings together a marriage of cacophonous sounds, airy vocals, speech singing, and syncopated melodies. She pretty much uses all the random sounds that may slink in and out of your backyard throughout your day that you may never think twice about.
Although she gets mad props for recording her tracks with just a Sony digital voice recorder, it’s her live performances that truly reveal her gifted musicianship. This one-woman-band act recently played a gig at the Polish Combatants Hall as part of Eric Warner’s Over the Top Fest and she left an audience that was equally perplexed and satisfied with her musical maneuvers. By using a looping pedal, she went from simple sounds to tribal cries to pounding drums.
Part Yoav, part-Feist and part-Kimya Dawson, this sound engineer sure knows how to cut it. I won’t go adjective crazy trying to describe her track, “Little Tiger,” but I can say that the eerie Silent Hill-esque intro slowly gives way to a haunting track that will surely whet the appetite of any indie-junkie.
