Top 5 Indie Rock(ish) Albums of Past Decade

Arcade Fire

Here’s a five-album guide to music that I feel is absolutely essential for everybody to listen to at least once. Doesn’t matter if you like rock, pop or rap. These five albums are what I deem to be extremely unique and what I consider to be five of the best rock(ish) albums of the past decade. Give them each a listen and I guarantee that by the end, you’ll know what I mean when I say that these are five albums that each and every person needs to know about.

Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004)

Arcade Fire Album

Why: Emotion. People are emotional. The thing is, though, that emotions are usually only evoked when a certain event happens. There is another (less natural, yet more natural in many ways) way to feel emotion. No, you don’t need to chop onions to make you cry, but rather, just listen to some Arcade Fire, particularly their album Funeral. It’s hardcore, it’s sweet, it’s loud, it’s pretty dang beautiful. The absolute clear-cut definition of what indie rock really is.

Beach House - Teen Dream (2010)

beach-house-teen-dream1

Why: There’s all sorts of music for all sorts of situations and predicaments, right? Right. Driving on the freeway, biking downtown, cleaning the apartment, etc. Well, here’s the one that can be listened to anywhere, anytime, whenever, wherever. Beach House’s dreamy anthems are, simply put, instant delights. No matter what you’re up to, they’re a hit. It’s more than that, though. Teen Dream is an album that pretty much hasn’t been done before. It’s relaxing, sexy, motivating and spiritual all in one.

Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? (2003)

Metric

Why: Metric does it all. Whether Emily Haines is screaming her guts out or whispering, she always gets her message across. In their songs you don’t only hear what they’re trying to say through their (mesmerizingly awing) music, you hear it loud and clear through her words. That makes sense though, right? Wrong. Nowadays, it’s definitely hard to find an artist that when you look at their lyrics, you aren’t compelled to think, “Oh, those are the label’s words right there.” Metric music’s has an beautified honesty to it; one that is far too infrequent in today’s music. “Tonight your ghost will ask my ghost: ‘Where is the love?’ Tonight your ghost will ask my ghost: ‘Who put these bodies between us?’”

Owen Pallett - Heartland (2010)

Owen Pallett

Why: What’s curious about Owen Pallett is his ability to have his music sound delicate and simple on the outside, but upon closer inspection, is gorgeously intricate. Heartland is (according to Pallett) a one-sided dialogue between a farmer named Lewis towards his creator, Owen. Heartland’s songs could be interpreted as symphonic pieces, a soundtrack to a racing video game or even an exercise playlist. No, the album isn’t all over the place, nor is it perfectly docile either. It’s whatever you want it to be.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (2005)

Sufjan Stevens

Why: This.

1/12/10 News briefs: Toronto Island Concert, Mystery Jets, Okkervil River, Let’s Wrestle and Owen Pallett

The first batch of bands have been announced for the annual Toronto Island Concert and this summer is a special one: Pavement are the headliners!!! Well, co-headliners. Along with indie rock’s greatest band of all time, local boys Broken Social Scene will also co-headline, along with Band of Horses. Pulling out all the stops, it seems. More bands will be announced in the coming months, but for all the details click here.

English eccentrics Mystery Jets spoke to NME.com and revealed that they’re third album is set for a March release (in the UK, we assume). Sounds good, but unfortunately they decided to axe a contribution by a penguin-mask-wearing bagpipe player they hired. Damn.

Rustic indie darlings Okkervil River have backed legendary rock’n'roll crazy Roky Erickson on his new solo album. The former 13th Floor Elevators frontman will release True Love Cast Out All Evil via Anti- on April 20th.

British indie band Let’s Wrestle have signed with Merge Records. The label will release their King Crimson-baiting debut album, In the Court of the Wrestling Let’s, on March 23rd. You can get yourself a free download of the track “We are the Men You’ll Grow to Love Soon” by right-clicking here.

Finally, in case you haven’t gone out and bought it yet, you can now stream Owen Pallett’s Heartland and see why it’s the best album of 2010 so far. Check out his MySpace page to hear it.

12/18/09 News briefs: Final Fantasy, The xx, Xmas indie rock, VOGUE and The Flaming Lips

Owen Pallett has changed his musical moniker from Final Fantasy to… wait for it… Owen Pallett. Yes, the Toronto-based Polaris Prize winner decided to finally give the video its name back. In a statement he wrote, “the laws of trademark infringement exist for good reason, and so I am voluntarily retiring my band name… I feel it is in my own best interests to definitively distinguish my music from Square/Enix’s games.” The name-change comes just in time for the new Final Fantasy Owen Pallett album, Heartland, which is out January 12th.

The xx are set to bring “a 3D physical interpretation” of their music to The Vinyl Factory in London. According to FACT, “The sculpture utilises film, light and sound via three specially created audio-visual units (each unit representing one member of the band with a mix of exclusively filmed footage and mixed sound), and every visitor will enjoy a totally unique experience of xx.” The show will happen for six days from January 8 to 12, 2010.

Stereogum has been nice enough to collect an assortment of indie rock-flavoured Christmas songs for its readers. Some of the tracks they’ve included are Lightning Dust’s “Ho Ho Ho, “Can’s “Silent Night,” an edit of Lindstrøm’s epic “Little Drummer Boy” and Julian Casablancas’ SNL cover, “I Wish It Was Christmas Today.” You can download them all free of charge here.

The Horrors, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Beirut, Mika and Adam Green, among others, have posed for a special music spread in the upcoming issue of VOGUE. You can see it over at OhNoTheyDidn’t.

The Flaming Lips along with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs will release their cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon on iTunes this Tuesday (December 22nd). The album will feature guest appearances by Peaches and Henry Rollins. It’s more than likely going to be rad.
