The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are releasing a brand new single called “Say No to Love.” On the flipside will be a track called “Lost Saint.” You can pick it up via Slumberland Records on June 8th. But more good news comes in the announcement of a North American tour. Okay, so it won’t come to Canada, but it will hit border cities like Buffalo and Rochester, New York, which are pretty close to Ontario. Even better is the news that fuzzy indie kids Surfer Blood will support them.
No Age is giving away a live album they recorded in Los Angeles recently. The gig was a performance of the score they wrote for a short film by Todd Cole for Rodarte titled Aenteni. You can grab it here.
Mates Of State’s next album will be strictly covers. The married couple of Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner recorded/produced the album themselves, which they’ve cutely named Crushes (The Covers Mixtape). Some artists’ songs you’ll hear include Death Cab For Cutie (“Technicolor Girls”), Belle & Sebastian (“Sleep the Clock Around”), The Mars Volta (“Son et Lumiere”), Daniel Johnston (“True Love Will Find You in the End”), Girls (“Laura”), Nick Cave (“Love Letter”), and Tom Waits (“Long Way Home”).
More details have emerged from the forthcoming album by The National. Due on May 11th, High Violet will feature Richard Reed Parry from Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens and Justin Vernon from Bon Iver in different capacities.
Finally, the rumours of legendary hardcore fusionists Refused reuniting were false, we know this, but the band will be reissuing their landmark 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come on two gorgeous slabs of blue wax limited to 500 copies. It won’t be out till June 8th, but pre-orders are underway and for something like this, it’s best not to wait.

The xx have been forced to cancel some shows due to exhaustion. If we’re going by Pitchfork the band just need to take a break after a gruelling schedule at CMJ in New York last week. But if we’re going by The Quietus, The xx could soon be searching for a new guitarist, as Baria Quereshi has taken a leave of absence.
The new video for No Age’s “Losing Feeling” is shot from the perspective of two cute little mice. There’s a nice surprise twist to it and notice the cameo of their new pair of Emerica vegan hi-top sneakers.
UPDATE: Chuck Biscuits is alive and well.
Former Danzig drummer Chuck Biscuits passed away on October 24th after a long battle with throat cancer. Born Charles Montgomery, the Canadian first got his break drumming for D.O.A., before working with Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear and even Run-DMC. Biscuits was 44.
The Hidden Cameras’ Joel Gibb has unveiled an anti-seal hunting billboard in downtown Ottawa. He plans to also perform a protest in the nation’s capital in order to bring attention to the one million seals being slaughtered every three years.
And just because we are all dying to see it, here is the trailer to Nirvana Live At Reading, which comes out this Tuesday, November 3rd.

Following in the footsteps of their label Sub Pop’s new Nike kicks, no-fi princes No Age have been given their own pair of Emerica skate shoes. Seeing as the band are vegan, they’re also made entirely of organic and synthetic materials.
Animal Collective actually do have a brand spankin’ new EP coming out in December called Fall Be Kind. Speaking with Pitchfork, Avey Tare says it’s “autumn themed” and the “vibe is a little bit darker.”
Serge’s daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg has finished recording her new album with Beck. Titled IRM, the album will be released on January 26th and will feature Charlotte backed by Beck and his band.
First it was Pitchfork and now Uncut has released its very, very different list of the best albums from the 2000s. Speaking of which, check back here next week for a lengthy list of my favourite albums from the last decade… When in Rome!
And don’t miss Sonic Youth perform an acoustic version of EVOL’s “Star Power” this coming Monday (October 12) on… yes, Gossip Girl! Or wait until next Friday (October 16) to see it on MuchMusic at 7:30 pm ET.

No Age Losing Feeling [Sub Pop]
While their background is L.A.’s DIY punk underground, both 2007’s Weirdo Rippers and last year’s Nouns validated No Age as a band without borders. Losing Feeling may just be an EP to tide us over until next year, but it delivers on two levels: satisfying the need to hear new material and furthering the band’s seemingly unlimited scope.
The title track may resemble the more textured side of Weirdo Rippers, but it’s even more set on building layers than virtually anything they’ve done so far. More dream pop than no-fi, Randy Randall’s guitar just flutters with melody and intermingling parts, and then eventually Dean Spunt kicks it into overdrive with his kit.
They ascend even deeper into dreamier areas with “Genie,” a drum-free track that finds Randall singing wistfully alongside his overdriven guitars.
The amorphous instrumental “Aim At The Airport” delves even deeper into the experimental arc they’ve always maintained, using loops and samples of rolling waves to help foster an ambient side.
It comes as a surprise then that Losing Feeling ends with the most “No Age sounding” cut. “You’re A Target” dives right into the band’s most familiar feeling: the thrashing and scrawling guitars, the crashing cymbals, the punk-driven melodies.
And yet, while the first three-quarters of this four-song EP is them expanding, it’s the last quarter that assures us they aren’t ditching what made them so bracing in the first place.
No Age sound comfortable playing the field with this unrestrictive approach. If only more bands could find space like this to work in without trying so hard. Because for Randall and Spunt it all sounds so effortless.
