During a week in which his latest album, This Is Happening, received “universal acclaim,” James Murphy brought LCD Soundsystem to Toronto for possibly the last time ever. Recently admitting that his third album will be his last, the Kool Haus was packed with fans both looking to get their sweat on and to bid adieu. And with his six-member band accompanying him, Murphy pieced together a set that made for an unforgettable night.
Front and centre on stage, Murphy was an obliging host, addressing the crowd like he was a lifelong friend, but also acting like an advisor, suggesting all the amateur videographers out there might maximize their fun by turning off the cameras and putting their own enjoyment ahead of YouTube’s. He followed that up by joking, “What do I know? I’m old.” Old by age, maybe, but not by action.
New single “Drunk Girls” certainly fit the venue’s Animal House-like atmosphere, encouraging both sexes with its double entendre to drink up and let go. The effervescent buzz of “Daft Punk Is Playing My House” and “Tribulations” offered up the same kind of release, converting the voluminous warehouse space into a house party that, if you closed your eyes, could very well have been back at Murphy’s place in Brooklyn. And “Movement,” an homage to Murphy’s all-time favourite band The Fall, verged on instigating a mosh pit due to its undulating pulse and raucous crescendos.
But the party vibe didn’t rest entirely on the band’s frat-pleasing rockers. LCD Soundsystem’s strength is in the multi-faceted nature of the music. “Get Innocuous!” and “Yeah” delved into the band’s knack for repetition-fuelled electro, while even the relatively unknown post-punk-centric B-side “Yr City’s A Sucker” kept heads nodding, despite its apparent obscurity.
Where LCD Soundsystem remain an anomaly though is in Murphy’s prowess for pulling out poignant paeans. “Someone Great” might fizz with oscillating synths and gurgling rhythms, but the subterranean bass drops only heighten the sentimentality behind the lyrics. And then there was the titular cousins “All I Want” and “All My Friends,” which Murphy dedicated to Toronto’s queer club king Will Munro, who passed away last week of brain cancer. The former bled with the soaring riff from Bowie’s “Heroes,” while the latter skipped to the piano, giving Murphy the right framework to express his nostalgia.
Closing with the one-two punch of his hipster-baiting signature song “Losing My Edge” and the open letter to his hometown “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” (which now features Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” as an addendum), James Murphy and his Soundsystem crossed every finger in the Kool Haus that it wasn’t their final show in Toronto. Because as he proved on this night, James Murphy certainly hasn’t lost any of that edge yet.
Check out the set list here.

Q: What do you get when you pair up LCD Soundsystem with Spike Jonze?
A: An army of bullies in poorly designed panda bear costumes torturing, assaulting and humiliating band members James Murphy, Nancy Whang and Pat Mahoney on set. What begins with innocent petting and undressing, quickly escalates into full-on beatings, spray painting, fire extinguishing, forced cross-dressing and fireworks.
It’s all in good fun though… right?

Wolf Parade have embraced their Montreal roots by naming their forthcoming album Expo 86. Speaking with Pitchfork, co-frontman Dan Boeckner said it “was definitely the most fun I’ve had recording a Wolf Parade record.” He also elaborated on the possibility of a double LP, saying “I’d really love to just release a single album and then, later on, an extended EP. But we’re still trying to figure out what format to put all the stuff out in. We want to release it all. I don’t feel that any of the songs are ugly cousins or duds.”
Former Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook is planning to celebrate the 30th anniversary of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis’ death with a series of gigs recreating the band’s debut album, Unknown Pleasures. Post-punk legends Gang of Four have partnered up with Pledge Music to help come up with the money needed to record a new album. A press release states that the band “is offering lots of extras and content exclusives to believers, including artwork, a scratch-n-sniff booklet, and even vials of blood.” Yes, if you donate the right amount of money, you could own the blood of Go4.
Despite the release of a new “singles and B-sides” collection called The Places Between and an announcement that they’ll be doing their “last” tour, England’s Doves are not breaking up. Guitarist Jez Williams told the Observer that he was misquoted and confirmed the band have no plans to disband. “It is our last tour for a bit. I never said forever,” he added.
And if you’re excited about This Is Happening, the forthcoming album from LCD Soundsystem, well, more good news comes in that James Murphy will be taking his band on the road this spring. They’ll stop off in Montreal on May 24th, Toronto on May 25th and Vancouver on May 31st.

Rising young British singer Ellie Goulding has admitted that all the hype she’s received actually sent her to the emergency room. Speaking with the Times Online, Ellie said that after opening up for Florence & The Machine, she ended up feeling “really upset and weird, it felt like having a heart attack. I actually went to A&E. I think that was a warning: that my body had to deal with the other person.” Her debut album Lights is out in stores tomorrow. For her health’s sake I hope it bombs… (Note: I think she’s actually fantastic and hope the best for Ellie Goulding’s career)

Speaking of highly anticipated new albums, LCD Soundsystem have not only one possible album, but also a score coming up… possibly. James Murphy told Drowned In Sound, “i guess it sounds like LCD, really. i mean, it’s different in some ways, maybe the same amount that SOS was different than the first record–maybe more different.” Meanwhile, the score will be for the forthcoming film by Noah Baumbach starring Ben Stiller. Murphy says “it has been really fun,” but not much else. The Playlist, however, says Murphy will be making a cameo in Greenberg.
Wait, another highly anticipated album? You don’t say. But yes, Panda Bear has revealed to Pedestrian.TV that he’s working on his next record. In a nutshell: “The rhythms are really basic and kind of raw and simple and are electronic. It’s not live instrumentation, I’ve been playing guitar but I feed it through the same thing that the sequences are on. It’s a very electronic sound and very voice heavy. A simple arrangement of drums, the guitar and singing. Really there are only two or three elements to every song. It’s pretty raw sounding for better for worse.”
Late great Scottish indie act The Yummy Fur are reuniting. Somewhat famous for once featuring Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos and Paul Thompson as members, the awkward cult band will play gigs in the UK and U.S. next January.

Fox Searchlight is in talks to bring a Ramones’ biopic to the screen. The film would be based on I Slept With Joey Ramone, the memoir written by brother Mickey Leigh and longtime punk writer and Ramones chronicler Legs McNeil. Sounds great, but didn’t they tell the band’s complete history in the End Of The Century doc?
Carl Barat has informed the NME that he is far too busy to reform The Libertines next year. Instead, it will happen “when it needs to happen,” which could be in 2011. Will anyone care at that point?
