Gucci Mane

Need to know: Gucci Mane, the rapper behind the “Free Gucci” campaign is in all likelihood just as famed for his disregard of the law as he is for his music. From being arrested on cocaine charges, to serving six months for assault, to being charged with murder, to violating probation, Gucci Mane has warranted all the attention. Nevertheless, with each nefarious act comes another crude masterpiece in mixtape form. Beginning with his 2005 debut “Trap House”, Gucci has released a steady flow of impressive mixtapes and albums, and now that is a free man, he is likely to keep producing more.

In a 100 words or so: In the subsequent months following his release from prison in May, Gucci Mane hasn’t lived up to expectations. At last, “Jewelry Selection”, Gucci’s first post-prison success, suggests that he just had to get back into the swing of things. Teaming with DJ Holiday, the mixtape embodies Gucci’s offbeat eccentricities that constantly contrast with his tough-guy persona. The mix has a handful of gems, all of which retain the inventive and sometimes absurd lyricism that makes Gucci so appealing. Notable tracks are ‘Making Love To The Money’, ‘Trap Talk’, ‘Gross’ and ‘Cleopatra’. His Swizz Beatz-produced single ‘Gucci Time’ featuring a Justice sampling, is also set to become the single on the next album, “The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted”, due September 28th. With a track like that and alleged collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Ciara and Estelle, it seems “The Appeal” will be a fine follow-up to “Jewelry Selection”.

Blonde Redhead have written an original score for a new documentary about Dungeons & Dragons. Yes, one of the greatest bands in the world have provided music for a film based on the geekiest craze of all time. The trailer for The Dungeon Masters says it all, but oddly enough, does not have any Blonde Redhead music in it. Note: It does, however, have some Guided By Voices.

SXSW has announced more of its line-up and yeah, no surprises, it’s pretty awesome. Newly added to March’s festivities are The xx, Neon Indian, Midlake, Woods, Apostle of Hustle, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Danielson, Javelin, Solange, The Smith Westerns and Toro Y Moi. Sweet…

Speaking of sweet, on Monday you’ll be able to download a new Gucci Mane mixtape produced by Diplo for free over at the Mad Decent blog. Diplo Presents: Free Gucci (Best of The Cold War Mixtapes) features Gucci spitting over remixes by the likes of Flying Lotus, Memory Tapes, Salem, Zomby and of course, Diplo himself.

Paying homage to the late King’s birthday (Elvis Presley would have been 75 today), Lightspeed Champion has covered Elvis’ “(You’re The) Devil In Disguise.” The leftfield UK popster went so far as to dress up like the King and cruise around Sunset Strip shaking his hips and such in a video for the song.

Despite what you might have heard, alt-folk supergroup Monsters of Folk (featuring M. Ward, Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James)are not working on a new album. Word leaked today that Conor Oberst had tweeted news about a new MOF record, but a rep for the band has come out and denied there is anything new planned. Also, Conor Oberst apparently does not have a Twitter account. Glad that’s all cleared up.

Diplo has described M.I.A.’s new album as sounding “like Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective.” The producer is currently working on her new album with Switch, and says they’ve already finished four tracks.

If goths weren’t into Twilight before well that will soon change. MTV is reporting that Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy will make a cameo in the third film, Eclipse. According to actor Billy Burke, who plays Kristen Stewart’s father, Murphy “plays a vampire in a flashback sequence.” We can only assume Bela Lugosi is rolling in his grave…

Cold Cave’s music is featured in a new ad for Radio Shack. Yes, you can now hear “Life Magazine” try and sell you electronic gadgets that you likely don’t need.

Asobi Seksu are looking to their fans to donate money to them for a UK tour. According to them, “Support bands on large tours like this make next to nothing.”

And the Pixies are offering fans a free download of special Doolittle live EP, which you can grab here.
