Broken Social Scene

Four records, a book, Polaris nominations and Juno wins, a couple of side projects, and a movie. It’d be an understatement to say that Broken Social Scene are an accomplished band. They’re much more than that. The Arts & Crafts family band that varies between six and nineteen members have stolen our hearts and are a band we’re proud to call our own. Thursday, December 9th the hometown heroes played the first of their two-night stint at Toronto’s Sound Academy, and the whole gang stopped by to say hi.

The night was a jam-packed mix of songs off all four of their records, with a focus on this year’s release, Forgiveness Rock Record. After opening with World Sick and Texico Bitches, they kicked into 7/4 (Shoreline) as some more Arts & Crafts friends joined in the fun. This included Metric’s Jimmy Shaw joined in the horn section, darling songstress Leslie Feist danced and belted her heart out, and the very preggers Amy Millan of Stars was as stunning ever.

Filled with conversation, BSS chatted to the crowd about G20, Mayor Rob Ford, and their love of Toronto. With a show that reached about two and a half hours, the songs just kept going and going and the fun didn’t stop. The night didn’t end until around 1 am (Kevin Drew crowd surfing included).

NewMusic First Spin: Jason Collett

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

jasoncollettmain

Though he’s unjustly recognized more for his membership in Broken Social Scene, prolific Toronto-based troubadour Jason Collett has built himself a trusty catalogue that’s equal parts hook-heavy pop, good time rock’n’roll and soul-searching folk.

Recorded with Carlin Nicholson and Michael O’Brien of his backing band Zeus, Rat A Tat Tatmarks Collett’s fourth album of the decade and arguably his best effort yet. Wearing his Canadiana roots on his sleeve, Rat A Tat Tatmoves like a tour across our fair nation, province to province - something he’s had his fair share of both as part of BSS and on his own.

Collett’s oeuvre is one that moves like a strong breeze through a selection of influences. Beginning with a Dylan-esque twang for “Rave On, Sad Songs,” Collett opens on one of the album’s more dour notes, exploring heartbreak by announcing “happiness is for amateurs” over a mix of accordion and country-blues guitar. But “Lake Superior” changes the colour of his mood ring by doubling up Collett’s vocals and dropping sharp, bleeding guitar riffs to generate some glam rock swagger.

“Love Is A Dirty Word” keeps things moving by kicking up a dirty, little funk bass line to accentuate the playful tone of Collett’s words, which he delivers in an amusingly cocky croon. He then strikes AM Gold with the swinging, feel-good stomper “High Summer,” and shows his contributions to the BSS enterprise with “Love Is A Chain,” flashing his chops for penning a perfect, road-trip-bound pop song.

The last quarter of Rat A Tat Tatexpresses a fondness for the Beatles in “The Slowest Dance” with its snap rhythm, tight guitar chords and underlining piano twinkle; album standout “Winnipeg Winds” summons a ghostlike presence to become an eerie murder ballad; and “Vanderpool Vanderpool” signs off with a lackadaisical coolness to it, resorting back his freewheelin’ Dylan-ish persona to draw the album to a close.

Jason will start up the van and take Rat A Tat Taton the road as part of the Bonfire Ball, which also features Zeus and Bahamas. The tour begins in Toronto on March 10th.

2/1/10 News briefs: Broken Social Scene, F**ked Up, Panda Bear, Beach House and Phoenix

Broken Social Scene have announced they’ll release their first album in five years on May 4th. Though it’s still untitled, Kevin Drew told Pitchfork that the album will be mostly a six-piece version of the band with guest appearances by Feist, Emily Haines, Amy Millan, Sebastien Grainger, Pavement’s Spiral Stairs and John McEntire from Tortoise, who also acted as producer. You can read the interview here.

Last week we told you that the beef between Fucked Up and Sonic Youth was not actually real, but that the Polaris Prize winners had a new song called “Cranking To Sonic Youth.” Well, you can now download that song for free on a new mixtape from guitarist and Young Governor frontman Ben Cook. Grab it from his No Guv No Luv blog.

Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) has revealed more details about his massively anticipated new album. Tomboy (yep, that’s what it’s called) will be out some time in September.

We love the new Beach House album, Teen Dream, so to hear that they performed four songs from it for the new Daytrotter Session is beautiful news to us.

And congratulations to Phoenix, who took home the only real Grammy Award that matters: Best Alternative Music Album. Okay, they’re all pretty meaningless, but the fact that they managed to win seems sweet on some level.

1/12/10 News briefs: Toronto Island Concert, Mystery Jets, Okkervil River, Let’s Wrestle and Owen Pallett

The first batch of bands have been announced for the annual Toronto Island Concert and this summer is a special one: Pavement are the headliners!!! Well, co-headliners. Along with indie rock’s greatest band of all time, local boys Broken Social Scene will also co-headline, along with Band of Horses. Pulling out all the stops, it seems. More bands will be announced in the coming months, but for all the details click here.

English eccentrics Mystery Jets spoke to NME.com and revealed that they’re third album is set for a March release (in the UK, we assume). Sounds good, but unfortunately they decided to axe a contribution by a penguin-mask-wearing bagpipe player they hired. Damn.

Rustic indie darlings Okkervil River have backed legendary rock’n'roll crazy Roky Erickson on his new solo album. The former 13th Floor Elevators frontman will release True Love Cast Out All Evil via Anti- on April 20th.

British indie band Let’s Wrestle have signed with Merge Records. The label will release their King Crimson-baiting debut album, In the Court of the Wrestling Let’s, on March 23rd. You can get yourself a free download of the track “We are the Men You’ll Grow to Love Soon” by right-clicking here.

Finally, in case you haven’t gone out and bought it yet, you can now stream Owen Pallett’s Heartland and see why it’s the best album of 2010 so far. Check out his MySpace page to hear it.

10/14/09 News briefs: The Cure, 2010 Olympics, Woodhands, Editors and Sex Pistols

Continuing their bid to reissue their entire catalogue, The Cure will finally release a remastered and expanded deluxe edition of their seminal Disintegration album. It’s three discs (!), which includes the original album, rarities/demos and a live set from 1989.

Who says the Olympics is all about sports? Broken Social Scene, Wilco, Iron & Wine, Sun Kil Moon, Stars and more will all perform out in Vancouver some time between February 12th and 28th.

Toronto’s Woodhands have a new album coming out in the New Year. The bizarrely titled Remorsecapade will see a release on January 26th, but the duo will be touring with Junior Boys in October and November.

Editors have hacked into Google Street View to present a unique way of listening to the album: through various stops in the city of London, which inspired the music.

Sex Pistols are looking to sue over an ad by a British ice cream company that has come up with the slogan “God save the cream” – not because they also have an absinthe-based ice cream cocktail called “Sex Pistol.” Right…
