A typical Labor Day weekend usually consists of relaxing backyards and BBQs, but on Friday September 3rd Kele was in Toronto to party. Kicking off his North American tour, Bloc Party’s leading man was ready to show off his summer solo release The Boxer, a more electro-dance focused record that echoes Bloc Party’s 2008 Intimacy.
After opener Does It Offend You, Yeah? warmed up the crowd with an impressive set, despite being without their lead singer, Kele marched on stage. Opening with his cheer chant-along song Walk Tall followed by On The Lam, the crowd was dancing along to the flashing strobe lights in no time. Dressed in a basketball jersey, basketball shorts, a flannel shirt and Chucks, Kele was moving and shaking more then ever.
Things slowed down a bit for the softer Everything You Wanted, a song that resonates the Silent Alarm This Modern Love-era Bloc Party. Kele then took a moment to chat with the crowd, joking about his other band that some audience members may have heard of. Smiling, he told the crowd that the next song was for those fans, the next song being a Bloc Party medley of Blue Light, The Prayer, and One More Chance. Kele closed up his set with his single about lusting for a younger hottie, Tenderoni and the mellow Rise.
Getting called back for an encore, Kele told concert-goers that time was up and he was getting kicked off, but he’d play a couple more songs. This encore included Unholy Thoughts and All The Things I Could Never Say to bring the night to a close.

Nashville’s two-man stoner pop crew JEFF The Brotherhood are making their way back up to Canada. The duo will play a number of shows with Quinton & Miss Pussycat, including Montreal on June 18th and Toronto the following night. They’ll then head to Vancouver in September for a solo show on the 9th. Check out their latest album Heavy Days - it rules.
Interpol have revealed they have a new logo! It’s not really exciting, but they’re also giving away a brand new track called “Lights,” which may or may not be on their forthcoming album. Grab it here. The band also wrote a quick note, saying: “”We will be posting important information and dates in the coming weeks.”
Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke has revealed the first single from his forthcoming solo album. The track is called “Tenderoni” (like the Chromeo track) and it’s definitely a big change in direction. Check it out here.
The beach pop Spaniards in Delorean are selling their new album as a T-shirt. Well, for the price of $20 you get the shirt and an MP3 version of their album Subiza. Visit the Matador Records store to get your copy. The band will be hitting up Canada in June and July: Vancouver on June 7th, Montreal on July 13th and Toronto on the 14th.
Love Woodhands? Sure you do. Well, Paper Bag Records is giving away a free remix EP. Titled Remixcapade (get it?), the six-track EP features Mathemagic, Diamond Rings and Woodhands’ own Dan Werb, among others remixing tracks from the band’s recent album, Remorsecapade. Download it here.

Hotly tipped Brookyn band The Drums have finally announced both a release date for their debut album and the label behind it. On the band’s website they confirmed that the album will come out on June 7th. Meanwhile, during an interview with Interview Magazine, the band’s label was revealed as Island/Universal. If you’re familiar, however, with North American release dates, June 7th could pose a problem seeing as it’s actually a Monday and not the standard Tuesday. Oh well, hopefully they’ll strike a deal over here soon…
On that same day (and label), Robyn will also release the long awaited follow-up to her 2005 self-titled album. Titled Body Talk Part 1, this will be the first of three albums Robyn has promised to release before the end of the year. The eight-track LP will feature the recently released track “Fembot” as well as a new single called “Dancing On My Own.”
Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke, however, has struck a North American deal to release his curious new solo album. Now going under the name Kele (like Madonna, Rihanna and Shakira), the album will be called The Boxer and will drop on June 22th via Glassnote Records (Phoenix, Temper Trap). Produced by Spank Rock’s XXXChange, Kele says “The key for the sound of the record was to take things as harsh and as physical as I could make it. The reason for going there was that these are the sounds that make me the happiest in the world.”
Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore will become a proper professor this coming Sunday, April 11th. The influential indie/noise rock legend will deliver a “Dissertation on White Noise” to a class of eight to 12 year-olds as part of the Partners & Spade “Avant Garde Preschool” in New York City.
And speaking of Sonic Youth, the band will be offering up some goodies for Record Store Day on April 17th. Not only will they be reissuing early LPs Confusion Is Sex and EVOL on white vinyl, but they’ll be bringing back their mysterious Starbucks “greatest hits” comp Hits Are For Squares for a double LP release. Other cool exclusives planned for the day include a split 7″ between Dum Dum Girls and Male Bonding, The Flaming Lips’ cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (on seafoam green vinyl no less) and a mouth-watering reissue of Rhino’s 4LP Joy Division vinyl box set.

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus has begun a new column on Spin.com where he reveals his favorite up-and-coming band. His inaugural pick? Vancouver power duo Japandroids because they “sound really different from anything out there.”
Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke is said to be working on a solo album. Electronic artist Hudson Mohawke said he will be doing “stuff” with Okereke, along with “one of the guys from Spank Rock.”
Ted Leo’s Misfits cover band TV Casualty took to the stage Halloween night in Philadelphia. This wasn’t some spoof; Leo pulled off a deadpan homage to Glenn Danzig and it looks amazing!
Norwegian psychedelic shoegazers Serena Maneesh have signed with 4AD and scheduled their long-awaited follow-up to 2005’s eponymous album for release in March 2010.
Finally, “Weird” Al Yankovic will join the Pixies on stage at the Echoplex in L.A. on December 8th. Al will sing “I Bleed” with the band, who will play two benefit shows to raise funds for the Winston’s Village charity.

Bloc Party drummer Matt Tong has raised a question mark about his band’s future. Speaking to the BBC, he said the band “definitely need to have a break and gain a bit of perspective on life outside of the band.” And that he “wouldn’t mind trying something else for a while.”
Lovable L.A. lo-fi punks Mika Miko have announced that they will break up after playing Austin’s Fun Fun Fun fest in the first week of November. Apparently there is “no bad blood at all” so if you’re in the area, you’ll likely still catch them hanging out together at The Smell, where they’re expected to play a final farewell show.
Portishead’s Geoff Barrow has revealed that the trio have begun working on a follow-up to last year’s brilliant Third that could end up as a “a multi-layered synthesizer record.” He also expects the band to begin playing shows in December.
If you’re in either L.A., Oakland, Seattle, Eugene, Denver, Chicago, NYC, Boston or DC in November you’ll be able to check out the Pixies perform Doolittle in its entirety. And depending on where you’ll be when they roll into town, you’ll also be able to see Jay Reatard, Bad Lieutenant (Bernard Sumner of New Order’s new band), No Age, Rain Machine or Mew open for them.
Chad VanGaalen is hoping to “have a feature-length sci-fi animated film finished in the next five years.” The two-time Polaris nominee says he’s also busy making both “a psychedelic folk record and a psychedelic rock record.”
