Earworm of the Day: No Joy “Heedless”

No Joy are a duo from Montreal, Quebec comprised of Laura Lloyd and Jasamine White-Gluz. Formed just a year ago, the band have since added a couple guys and expanded to a quartet, befriended Best Coast (who called them “the best band ever”), signed to buzzy boutique indie label Mexican Summer and released a sold-out 7″. They were all the rage at both Pop Montreal and CMJ last month and are currently playing shows with Vivian Girls side-project La Sera.

Taken from No Joy’s debut album, Ghost Blonde (out November 16), “Heedless” is a pure throwback to shoegaze’s golden era, drowning in discombobulating, sludgy guitars, washed out, angelic vocals and murky production that rivals the best work of forebears like Ride, Lush and My Bloody Valentine.

Catch No Joy live in Canada this month when they play Parts and Labor in Toronto with METZ on November 17 and Casa Del Popolo in Montreal for their official album launch with Grimes, Ducktails and METZ on November 27.

Swedish pop pixie Robyn has announced that she’ll release not one, not two, but three - count ‘em three - new albums in 2010. In an interview with Bon magazine, the singer said the first one will be out this spring, with the other two following in summer and winter. The albums will feature work with Röyksopp, Diplo and a “rap duel” with Snoop Dogg. Wowsa!

Pavement played their first reunion show in New Zealand umm… today. The band played Auckland’s Town Hall and played a “greatest hits” set that included classic cuts like “Perfume-V,” “Box Elder,” “The Hexx,” “Here” and b-side “Give It A Day.” The band have confirmed only one Canadian date so far in Toronto at Olympic Island on June 19th. A compilation of Pavement’s “best” songs, Quarantine the Past, is out March 9th.

Rising young British singer Ellie Goulding has admitted that all the hype she’s received actually sent her to the emergency room. Speaking with the Times Online, Ellie said that after opening up for Florence & The Machine, she ended up feeling “really upset and weird, it felt like having a heart attack. I actually went to A&E. I think that was a warning: that my body had to deal with the other person.” Her debut album Lights is out in stores tomorrow. For her health’s sake I hope it bombs… (Note: I think she’s actually fantastic and hope the best for Ellie Goulding’s career)

LCD Soundsystem will release their new album in May. No date or title is confirmed.

Much loved noise pop duo Best Coast will be bringing their girl-group-inspired lo-fi ditties to Canada for a short North American tour. The band will play Montreal at The Cove on April 12th and Toronto at The Garrison on April 13th.

Earworm: Best Coast “Make You Mine”

Who: Best Coast

What: Los Angeles-based duo of Pocahaunted’s Bethany Cosentino and underground eccentric Bobb Bruno.

Sounds like: “A bunch of songs about summer and the sun and the ocean and being a lazy creep” according to the band. Also water damaged demos by any of the Brill Building, Motown or Phil Spector-helmed girl groups or a beach party where Annette and Frankie are getting hot and heavy. Categorized by some blogs as “lazy haze.”

RIYL: Hipster faves like Vivian Girls, Pearl Harbor, Wavves and Dum Dum Girls, golden girl bands like The Shangri-La’s, Ronettes, The Poni-Tails and The Shaggs, the minimalism of Young Marble Giants

Need to know: While they can easily be lumped in with that lo-fi “thing” that everyone’s either loving or hating right now, Best Coast are more rooted in the heartbroken, high school harmonies that swept the ‘60s. The limited edition Where The Boys Are cassette on Blackest Rainbow sold out instantly, but there are a bunch of 7-inches coming out soon: a self-titled on Art Fag, Make You Mine on Group Tightener, as well as one on Post-Present Medium and Black Iris. You can also check out what Bethany’s perfect make-out mixtape would be here.

Track: “Make You Mine” is a winsome throwback to when teenage life was full of idyllic dreaming and “the point” was the place to do some neckin’. Bethany’s lonesome vocal is stuck in between a girl sick with puppy love and an aggressive stalker calculating a romance with her crush. It’s all very barebones, with Bethany’s voice and guitar acting as the primaries, while handclaps and a tambourine provide the faintest rhythm.

Buy: Nothing’s on sale at the moment, but you can keep up with Bethany over at bestycoasty.blogspot.com.
