Garage rocker Jay Reatard was found dead at his home in Memphis, Tennessee today. The cause of death is unknown. He was 29.
According to the Memphis-based website, The Commercial Appeal, police have opened an official investigation into his death. Jay Lindsey’s body was found at 3:30 am this morning.
His former label Goner Records first broke the news by posting the following message: “It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public.”
Current label Matador Records also posted a message, writing: “We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly.”
Jay Reatard left behind an extensive back catalogue, most notably 2006’s seminal garage punk album, Blood Visions. Jay was also a prolific songwriter with a number of punk bands including The Lost Sounds, Angry Angles, Bad Times, The Final Solutions and his first band, The Reatards. Jay’s most recent album was last year’s Watch Me Fall.
