Earworm: jj “Ecstasy”

Who: jj

What: Mysterious Scandinavian group that nobody, not even the magical woodland elves who contribute to Wikipedia, knows anything about. It has been speculated that jj is a side-band by Gothenburg, Sweden-based electronic pop duo The Tough Alliance, if only because the band is on their label, Sincerely Yours.

Sounds like: Lush, futuristic, laid-back, minor-key Balearic house with a balance of synths, drum machines and real strings, guitars, percussion and hypnotic, ghostly vocals.

RIYL: Enigma, Röyksopp, Saint Etienne, Massive Attack, Boards of Canada, Portishead, Junior Boys, M83.

Need to know: By design, very little. They’re not even on MySpace!

Track: “Ecstasy” is a partial cover of Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop” that sounds like it was recorded at dusk in the bottom of a canyon on one of Jupiter’s moons by a chorus of Gregorian chanting androids circa 2027. After an ambient opening that includes some forest sound effects, an interpolation of the “Lollipop” instrumental sinks to the bottom of a mix full of Roland TR-808 kicks and snares, and an altered version of the original track’s pre-chorus evolves into the singer’s celebration of Ecstasy (we do not condone Ecstasy use, btw) in Miami.

Buy: The album n° 2 is available to download for $8.10 U.S. here.
