Kings Of Leon Photos From The ACC

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

by Alberto Bonora

Last night Kings Of Leon ripped the roof off the ACC with an amazing show. The sold out ACC is a huge jump for the boys from Tennessee who have previously played the Kool Haus. With the success of their latest album ‘Only By The Night’ it was no surprise to me that they would sell out the ACC, it was only a matter of time.

The minute that the Followill brothers and cousin stepped foot on stage, everyone in the ACC were on their feet cheering. This was probably the loudest show I’ve ever been to at the ACC (which also includes Leaf & Raptor games).

New Video: Sébastien Tellier - Roche

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

If you haven’t already heard Sébastien Tellier’s album Sexuality, number one I’m kinda surprised (they sell it at American Apparel, for crying out loud) and number two, you kinda need to. It’s 50 minutes of sexy makeout music full of ‘oohs and ahhs’ that will get you in the mood for extreme romance. The kind of mood that an afternoon of shopping at American Apparel (or looking at its ads) might put you in.

Sexuality was released about a year ago and produced by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (hi Daft Punk: please release some new music. Thanks!). The album’s songs are half English, half French and are highly recommended for any fans of Air, Weekend Players, Husky Rescue and Lemon Jelly.

Check out the brand new video for the lazy and fluid track Roche, featuring a bearded and white-clad Sébastien Tellier on a beach playing piano a la John Lennon in Imagine. It’s a sexy, relaxing video that will definitely transport you straight out of winter’s bitter frost, if only for 5:02.

If, like me, this makes you a little amoureuse de Sébastien, check his MySpace page for some selections from the album.

As you may know, I have massive amounts of love for Berlin, Germany’s Modeselektor (sometimes cheekily referred to as MDSLKTR). The duo’s first two punctuation-infused albums, Hello Mom! and Happy Birthday were phenomenal and are in regular rotation on my stereo. (more…)

Earworm Of The Week: Röyksopp - Happy Up Here

Norway’s Röyksopp have a brand new album (their third!) called Junior and it’s out March 23. It features pretty much every cool Scandinavian female vocalist out there (including Robyn, Lykke Li and Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife).

Their previous albums (Melody A.M. and The Understanding) both went #1 in the UK and other European countries, and after hearing the new single Happy Up Here I have no doubts Junior will do the same. (more…)

Earworm Of The Week: Skittlebrau “Return Of The Waterboys”

Monday, January 19th, 2009

This deliciously great song/video was just sent my way and I think you’ll enjoy all 2:54 of it if you like smooth rhymes set to samples from ancient songs. The ‘video’ features clips from the movie American Pop, directed by Ralph Bakshi (who also did Fritz The Cat).

Skittlebrau is a periodic side project featuring Conner Lovat-Fraser & Ben Arsenault (Boys Night Out) and Bob Anderson. The vocals in this song are reminiscent of old Del (Tha Funkee Homosapien, ya know?) and the groove is rather infectious. Check the video below!

The NewMusic: Rebirth Of The Dears?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

On this week’s NewMusic show we’ve got some great interviews with T.I., Shawn Hewitt, Stereophonics, Spirtitualized and King Khan. But the one that stood out for me was the interview with Murray Lightburn, lead singer of The Dears. The Dears were one of the Montreal bands (along with Arcade Fire, The Stills, Stars) that Time, Spin and The New York Times were raving about back in 2005 which definitely boosted their profile. The Dears are extremely popular but they’re also somewhat of an acquired taste. They’re not always easy to get into, their songs demand something from the listener, and it often takes a couple of passes until you start to really appreciate their music.

The big story this time, is that there was a kind of musical putsch within the band, with the only remaining original members left being Murray and his wife Natalia. Murray says it was time for a change because “things got really lame, really dark with personalities not getting along.” So it’s a whole new Dears this time around (and a new album, Missiles) but their focus remains the same, to produce long-lasting art in our disposable, throwaway society. As Murray says, the band “is really just delivering this cosmic grandness through something as bullshit as rock n’ roll.”
